Book Review: Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Ugly Love tore me apart and put me back together again!

I have heard such great things about this Colleen Hoover book and it did not disappoint. If you don't know who Colleen Hoover is, she is a new adult author that has become one of my favorite authors. After reading Maybe Someday earlier in 2015, I was worried that I would be disappointed by this one. Luckily and thankfully, I was not. I adored the story!

Ugly Love tells the story of Tate Collins and Miles Archer. When Tate movies in with her older brother, Corbin, she doesn't realize her life is about to get a lot more complicated. Besides knowing that, I would go into this book blind. That is what I have done with a three of the five novels I have read from her and those have turned out to be my favorite.

This book was set up in a great way. Instead of being completely linear, the book follows two points of view. Tate's point of view takes place in present day, while Miles' point of view takes place six years ago. I haven't read a book with that type of point of view, and only know of one book that does the same thing, which is I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. I loved how the past and present intertwined and how parts of the past would come up in the present.

I didn't realize how much I would cry in this book. I had only about 100 or so pages left and hadn't cried yet, so I didn't realize what all the mayhem was about. Though I know that there is always a tragic crisis, but I wasn't expecting what happened. This one struck me harder than the others and I was just a ball of tears. From the last 100 pages, I cried both sad and happy tears until the very end.

In comparison to the other Colleen Hoover books I have read, this is my second favorite. Maybe Someday holds this cake, but this was a very close second. My only issue was that some of Tate's reactions were annoying. She didn't stand up for herself as much as I wanted to throughout the book, which was my main problem.

Besides that, I want to remain vague with the book. It is best going into the book without knowing much, but do know that this book has very polarized opinions. While others love this, there is also a good amount that sees major flaws. Do know that this book is racier in comparison to some other works by Colleen Hoover, so if you don't like reading sex scenes then the book might not be for you. They aren't detailed, but it is obvious what is going on.

With that, I give this book

4.75 out of 5 Stars!

  1. I love this book! SO much love for CoHo and I'd previously read the Slammed series and Hopeless series so I was happy to go into this one blind. Like you I cried ALOT, but it was amazing. If you haven't already I would definitely recommend you reading November 9 by CoHo. FULL of emotion and will definitely become a new favourite!

    1. I want to read November 9 so much but my library doesn't have it and I just bought a ton of books for Christmas, so it'll have to wait! :( I think I read Hopeless knowing way to much about it, and then accidentally spoiled myself for the twist ending. Slammed was the first CoHo book I read! It has a special place in my heart. <3

      Thanks for stopping by! :D

    2. Aw, I hope you manage to get your hands on it soon. Oh no, the twist ending is the best bit! I never even knew Slam poetry was a thing before I read Slammed, now I can't get enough of it!

  2. Would you be believe if I said I have all the books by CoHo but haven't read any one yet? Unfortunately, that's true but I'm planning to binge read all her books after my final exams finish. I'm so glad you loved this book. Can't wait to read it. Great review! :-)
