Book Review: Waterfall by Amber Garr

Unfortunately, I was massively disappointed by this book.

I haven't read a dystopian novel in such a long time, so I was hoping that I would adore this book. Waterfall follows the story of Vivienne and Zach, two teenage best friends who are trying to survive after all the fresh water is depleted.

The plot itself is intriguing, but there was a vital part missing that kept me from enjoying this book, and that was character development. Vivienne and Zach never grew as characters throughout the whole entire book. They never seemed real to me, and that might be because we never saw their psych analyzed. Amber Garr does touch on it at the very end, but it was too little too late.

Another thing that bugged me about this book were that there was two distinct parts. There is one part of the novel that follows Zach and Vivienne right as the apocalypse occurs, and then the book jumps forward a couple months. In just those two parts, the characters had massive changes in their character and actions that weren't believable, no matter how much trauma they experienced. My wish is that these two parts were each one novel. If that was the case, there would be more room for character development in both the main and side characters that would have made the story much more believable.

Even though I will not be continuing on with the series, I am not necessarily dissuading you from reading this. Waterfall wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it more than I did. The book did capture my attention, it just didn't speak to me. After a while, I couldn't suspend my disbelief because of the weak world building and character development.

With that, I give this book
2 out of 5 Stars!

*Thank you to Netgalley, Mark My Words Publicity, and Amber Garr for providing an e-copy of Waterfall in exchange for an honest review.*

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Did you enjoy the sequel a bit more? I know you gave both of them three stars but I'm still wondering. :D Thanks Poulami!!
