BOOK REVIEW | United by Melissa Landers

Title: United
Author: Melissa Landers
Series: Alienated Trilogy #3
Source: I got United through my local library.
After thwarting a deadly coup and saving the alliance between their worlds, Cara and Aelyx have finally earned a break. Their tiny island colony is everything they dreamed it would be―days spent gathering shells on the beach and nights in each other’s arms.

But the vacation is short-lived.

The treaty between Earth and L’eihr has awakened an ancient force that threatens to destroy them all. The Aribol, mysterious guardians charged with maintaining interstellar peace, deem the alliance a threat to the galaxy. They order a separation of the races, decreeing humans and L’eihrs must return to their own planets within the month or face extinction. In fact, they already have agents in place on Earth, ready to begin.

With the clock ticking, Aelyx and Cara assemble a team of colonists and race back to Earth, where they unite with old friends to solve the mystery of who the Aribol are, what they want, and the real reason the alliance has provoked them. As tensions build to a full-scale war, Aelyx and Cara must fight harder than ever―not just for their future, but for the survival of both their worlds.

The Alienated Trilogy by Melissa Landers has also been such a blast to read. Though the series has never been a favorite of mine, I am always entertained. If you didn't know, this trilogy was set to be only a duology. Thankfully we got a third and final book!

Cara and Aelyx are such great characters to read from. They have really grown since the first installment of the series. I love how they are so supportive of each other; they are much more mature about everything! Plus, their romance is pretty hot. It always added a bit of light-heartedness when things got a bit heavy.

The secondary characters were expanded on in the final book and I really appreciated it. I got such a better grasp of who they really are. Instead of being some cardboard cut-outs, they stood out. Instead of trying to get past the scenes they were in, I was really interested.

What is great about this series is that the world is believable. Sure, they are aliens and different planets and all sorts of other things, but I never once have thought, "This is stupid. This obviously isn't going to happen." Landers does a great job of suspending the readers disbelief. I was always invested in the story.

My main fault with United was how it seemed to lack originality. The big beds from the last book just came back again but with allies. I got bored with hearing about the same antagonists again and was wishing for something new. It was still entertaining, but not as much as I wished.

Have you read anything by Melissa Landers? What did you think?

Thanks for stopping by and I'll see you soon with another post!

Happy Reading!

  1. I loooooved books one and two! I haven't read this one yet, though it's only a matter of time. I sort of expected what you said - that this one would be not as good/entertaining as the first two. I'm not sure why but I've been bracing myself for that. I have no doubt that I'll enjoy the book, just probably not as much as I loved the first two, or Starflight. The one I'm really looking forward to reading is Starfall. I have it preordered. :D

    Anyway! Wonderful review, Genni!

    1. I can't say I LOVED the first two books, but I really enjoyed them! This last one is a good time, but all means. It just wasn't as good of a time. ;D I understand where you're coming from. You don't want to be disappointed! I'm looking forward to your review on Starfall!

      Thanks Alyssa! :)

  2. I just read this one myself about a month ago. I loved reading about the secondary characters too, especially about their siblings ;)
I totally understand what you mean about the originality, but I thought that the action was a little bit better than in the other books.
    Wonderful review.

    1. Yes! I loved reading about the siblings. Especially because we don't see them that much in Alienated or Invaded. The action sequence on top of the tower was really well done, but the antagonists just didn't intimidate me as much. Thanks Aneta! :D
