My (very late) January Wrap Up!

Hello everyone and welcome back (or to!!) my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be going over the books I read this January! As per usual for me, I set my goodreads goal to 100 books. Even though I'm already behind (school has been tough, family has been dramatic), but I don't think I'm going to lower it. The year is still young, and I have plenty of opportunities to keep up!

This year, I'm going to be including movies that I have also seen in the month. I'll be linking them to my reviews (if I wrote them), just like I will link my book reviews to the books if I got a review up!

Without further ado, here are the books I read and the movies I watched this January!

Books
1) My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories, edited by Stephanie Perkins
2) Stay with Me by Mila Gray
3) You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone by Rachel Lynn Solomon
4) Oblivion: A Lux Novel by Jennifer L. Amrentrout
5) Busted by Gina Cioccia
6) Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
7) Road to Eugenica by AM Rose
8) Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs

All of these but one were for personal enjoyment! I read Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl for a a women studies class I'm in, and thought it was so powerful. Slavery isn't well taught (especially in the South US, where I'm from) so I loved finally reading a slave narrative and getting a better grasp on what being a slave really was. Of course, I'll never be able to truly understand the black experience, but it was eye opening.

My favorite of these would either by Simon vs., Stay with Me, or You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone. I liked all the others, but I don't have super strong feelings for or against them now. The only other one that really stands out was Busted. I haven't done a full review, and too much time has probably passed, but it was a super quick and fun read.  Road to Euegenica was okay, but I had some issues with it, and Oblivion...ugh. Please read my post about how the book mishandles sexual assault here.

Movies
So funny story, I didn't keep track of the movies I was watching in January until it was almost over! But here's what I remember!

1) Singin' in the Rain
2) Girls Trip
3) Okja
4) Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
5) Atomic Blonde
6) Mind Game
9) Bicycle Thieves
10) The Garden of Words
11) Dr. No
12) Call Me By Your Name

A couple of these I saw for a film class I'm in, a couple for a film club I'm in, and around half was just because I wanted to! Out of these 12, my favorite is (by far) Call Me By Your Name. Call Me By Your Name is literally one of my favorite movies of all time now. I'm not expecting it to get the Oscar, just because there are so many strong contenders. I also really enjoyed Singin' in the Rain and OkjaMy least favorite is definitely Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Though the visuals were stunning, the plot wasn't executed well.

Have you read any of these books or seen any of these movies? What did you think?

Thanks so much for stopping by and I'll see you soon with another post!

Happy Reading!

  2. Haha don't worry, I still haven't even started putting together my January wrap-up and it's almost March! This weekend, for sure! I've been wanting to read Road to Eugenica ever since I started seeing advance reviews a few weeks ago so hopefully I'll be able to pick it up soon :) I hope your schoolwork and family troubles lessen up in March, Genni, if they haven't already :)

    1. I'm glad to know I'm not alone! :) I hope you like Road to Eugenica! I wasn't amazed by it, but I did have a good time. Thanks Laura! They've gotten a bit better, but I'll be stress-free once next Wednesday rolls around - I'll be done with finals!

    1. It's okay, but I wasn't too stunned by it. I wasn't paying that much attention, but I was also really tired when I watched it. I do think that Charlize Theron did a great job with her character, and it was refreshing to see a woman in this kind of role.

I hope you love it!! It was outstanding. :)

      Thank you Amy! You too!
