As for awkwardness, there was a lot of tension between the main two characters for some time. I personally liked it, but I think it depends on the person. I wouldn't say this book is necessarily sad. There is death, but it was like in the first book when the Icarus fell and we didn't know anyone on the ship. This was my favorite of the series, I found the story more intriguing than the second and more dangerous than the first.
