Top 5 Wednesday : Authors I Want to Read More From

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I am going to be participating in Top 5 Wedensday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. This week's topic is the top five authors that I want to read more from. Getting this down to five was a bit difficult, but I managed!

Without further ado, here are the five authors I picked this week (in no particular order)

1) Jenn Bennett
I absolutely loved Alex, Approximately. Alex, Aprrozimately was a You've Got Mail-esque tale where Bailey "Mink" Rydell moves to Corondo Cove in Calfiornia. Living there is an online friend she's made, Alex. However, she doesn't tell Alex she moves there. Instead, she wants to find him. Along the way she meets Porter Roth, and they don't get along very well. Little does she know that Porter and Alex are one and the same. Reading this book was such a blast and the characters were so real. I loved how Bennett put in movie quotes and references to board games, and more. She made the characters and the town really come to life. In short, her writing was spectacular. I cannot wait to read more of her, and I hope she becomes one of my favorite authors, because she has the potential to be. Be on the look out for my review!


2) Cassandra Clare
So this might be a bit of a cop out, because I have read the majority of Clare's books. I just have to read the last of TMI and TID, Lady Midnight, and all the other things like The Bane Chronicles. However, I still want to read more of her because I want to be caught all up! I am so close and yet so far away, but I'm really looking forward to catching up by the end of this year. 

3) Kasie West
So, if you didn't know, I put up a pretty harsh review of The Fill in Boyfriend in October 2015. This month though, I finally decided to give Kasie West a second chance with By Your Side, which I'll be reviewing soon! I liked the book so much more than The Fill in Boyfriend. By no means was it perfect, but I had a fun time with it. I want to read more of Kasie soon so that I can actually form an opinion of her!

4) Lesley Livingston
Livingston got a lot of attention this year for The Valiant, which was a great read. I actually reviewed the book here. The Valiant had great feminist themes and I loved everything it stood for. I had the pleasure of meeting Livingston and telling that to her, and she was such a joy to be around and she was so down to earth and hilarious. Livingston has actually published a lot of other books, so I'm interested to see what I think of them!

5) Jay Kristoff

Last but not least if Jay Asher! The only books I have read by him are Illuminae and Gemina, which are co-authored with Amie Kaufman. I want to see what his books are like just written by him, and I definitely think I'll start with Nevernight. I have a good feeling about this one, and I seriously hope that I love the book and Kristoff!

T5W: Books to Get out of a Slump

This week we are featuring the top five books we want to finally read this upcoming year. This isn't upcoming releases, but those that I have meant to read for a year or more. 

T5W: Gateway Books to YA Contemporary

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be participating in Top 5 Wedensday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. Lainey from Gingerreadslainey is the founder of Top 5 Wednesday. This week's topic is Gateway Books to Your Favorite Genre. To be honest, I don't have a favorite genre. I try to read an array of genres, so I just decided to pick one and roll with it. 

I'm going to be focusing on YA contemporary, but ones that have darker themes. While I adore the happy go lucky contemporaries, I tend to enjoy contemporaries that deal with heavier subjects more. Here are five gateway books to YA contemporary:

5.) Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles
Leaving Paradise is one of the first YA contemporaries I read that dealt with darker material. Maggie now permanently walks with a limp after she was hit by a car by her next door neighbor Caleb. Both teenagers are outcasts, and they eventually find solace in each other, but their past is very messy and leads to heightened tensions. 
 
4.) Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler
Twenty Boy Summer wrecked me when I first read it. The novel follows Anna and her friend Frankie. They dare each other to see who can kiss 20 boys within the summer. What makes this different from a light contemporary is the fact that Anna was secretly dating Frankie's older brother, Matt, before his death a year ago. Frankie never knew, and seeing Anna dealing with her grief, lying to her friend, and coming to terms with Matt's death is heartbreaking and bittersweet and ugh SO. GOOD. 
 
3.) The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Nelson is known for her hard-hitting contemporaries (I'll Give You the Sun is extremely popular). When I read The Sky is Everywhere a few years back, I was a mess. The novel focuses Lennie and how she deals with the untimely death of her older sister. This book hit me so hard because the relationship between Lennie and her sister is much like that of my own. If you've only read I'll Give You the Sun, I urge you to pick this one up!!
 
2.) The Running Dream  by Wendelin Van Draanen
Jessica's dreams are seemingly shattered when she loses one of her legs due to a car crash. She struggles with accepting that her future is changed, as well as being a social outcast. Jessica's character growth is great here; she befriends Rosa, a girl with CP that Jessica dismissed before her accident. I loved the ending, and writing about it is making me want to read the book again!
 
1.) Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Yoon's debut novel Everything, Everything was one of my favorite books of last year. Maddie has a rare disease that is commonly known as the 'bubble disease'; she needs to live in a sterile environment and has no interaction with any humans besides her mother and her caregiver, Carla. The latter changes when she meets Olly, her new next door neighbor. Everything spirals out of control, and the plot twist was fantastic.

Top 5 Wednesday: Most Unlikeable Characters

Today's topic is are our top five most unlikable characters. This doesn't mean villains, it means unintentionally unlikable characters. This was pretty easy for me because I have a whole entire shelf on goodreads dedicated to annoying main characters. I'm pretty mean throughout this whole entire post, so I'm sorry if I offend anyone!

Top Five Wednesday: Most Recent Additions to my Wishlist

As you can see, the prompt for this week are our top five recent additions to my wishlist. I don't usually buy books (I'm very cheap, guys!), so I just picked out the top 5 books I've recently added to my goodreads TBR. This list is in no particular order. :)


5.) Places No One Knows by Brenna Yovanoff
I added this book to my TBR after I saw my blogger friend, Alicia, write a review for it! Check it out here! I had seen the book floating around the blogosphere, but her review sold me on it! I'm interested to see how I like it! It's been a while since I've read a YA contemporary that has some difficult subject matter.

4.) Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh
Who doesn't love a prehistoric fantasy that is a loose retelling of Pride and Prejudice? I've only read one book that was set in ancient history, and that was Forbidden by Kimberely Griffiths Little. I feel like most historic fiction is set  in the 1800s. The setting is what really draws me in!

3.) Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields
The premise of Poison's Kiss is a classic fantasy. It's about a girl, who I am sure is a very special snowflake, that is ordered to kill the one boy she loves. And I am definitely not complaining! Everyone needs a good fantasy here and there, and I'm looking forward to picking this up! Also, the cover is gorgeous.

2.) It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite authors. I've heard that this is the best one yet, and while that is subjunctive, I'm hoping it applies to me! It Ends With Us has a focus on the difference between an abusive relationship and a healthy one. CoHo hasn't disappointed me yet, and I don't think she will now!

1.) The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles
Last but certainly not least is The Edge of Everything! I started hearing about this around BEA, and I can't stop but think about it all the time now. I'm very much looking forward to its release date. The book is essentially about how a bounty hunter from hell that is sent to claim the murder of the main character's father. I love how original the plot is!

Top Five Wednesday: My Favorite Posts

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! Today I am participating in Top Five Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Samantha from Thoughts on Tomes. The topic for this week includes some shameless self promotion. Today I am highlighting my favorite posts I have done so far on my blog!

5.) Adaption Talk: Shadowhunters S1E9- Rise Up
Okay, this might seem out of nowhere, but I adore my Adaption Talk posts. They might not get the most traffic or comments, but I have so much fun doing them. This is my favorite out of all of them just because I feel like my personality really shines through in this one. I'm so glad I started doing these types of posts on my blog and I will for sure continue them!

4.) Liebster Award!
The Liebster Award isn't the first award that I received (that would be the One Lovely Blog Award), but it is one where I feel like my personality shines through the most. I always like it when I can include fun facts about myself with my readers. I hate feeling so disconnected and impersonal, and the Liebster Award did the opposite of that. Plus, being nominated for an award makes me feel so loved by the community, and this was no exception. Thanks again Lauren! <3

3.) Stacking the Shelves #1
While this might seem random, I am so proud of myself for doing this post. It is one of my most recent posts, actually. I wanted to add something new to my blog after doing the same weekly memes over and over again. Stacking the Shelves was a way for me to branch out even more. I also got a ton of traffic on that post for some reason, and I'm not complaining! Well, I know the reason. The day that I did that post my friend Denise from The Bibliolater did a post of her newest favorite blogs and I was listed. Thanks again Denise!!! You rock! :D

2.) Book Review: The Unexpected Everything
I love my review post for The Unexpected Everything for two reasons. Not only do I think it is one of my most well written reviews, but I was able to connect to more people because of the unique experience I took part in. I was part of the Review Train this year, and I absolutely loved the experience. Thanks again to Brittany from Space Between the Spines for hosting such a great and unique event! I got to meet a ton of more bloggers, and it was a great way to start off the summer.

1.) Discussion: Am I Becoming Too Harsh of a Critic?
This is the first discussion post of mine where I felt like I was being coherent in my thoughts. I had done some other discussion posts beforehand, but I am the most proud of this one because I felt as if I were able to get my thoughts across clearly. This is the latest post where I have put the most effort in to, also. I got amazing feedback from it and it was definitely worth the work. :D

Top 5 Wednesday: Summer Reads

Hey guys and welcome back to my blog! Today I'll be taking part of the weekly meme Top 5 Wednesday. This is hosted by Sam from Thought on Tomes over on youtube. I know, two blog post in one day! Who would've ever thought that would be possible? :D

This week's topic is top 5 summer reads. Here are my picks for the week, in no particular order!

5.) One Paris Summer by Denise Grover Swank
I just recently read this through Netgalley and this will be the perfect read for the upcoming summer season. Not only is the setting in summer (and Paris), but the novel is fun and quick paced, just like I'm sure we wish all of our summers to be. Though this isn't the perfect book, I had such a great time reading it. Read more of my thoughts in my book review here!

4.) Boys Over Flowers by Hana Yori Dango 
Okay, I've only read the first six novels in this manga series, but I am going to be reading more of it hopefully this summer. The plot of the series is so much fun and the unique cast makes it a perfect read for the summer. 

3.) Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill 
Meant to Be is a classic YA contemporary novel. I forgot if it's set in the summer (I read it Dec. 2014!), but even if it isn't the book is perfect for the summer. This is similar to One Paris Summer in that our main character travels internationally and falls in love with someone that gave off a bad first impression. I want to read more by Morrill because her books are like candy: short and sweet. 

2.) Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
New Adult screams summer to me. I was trying to put a new adult novel here that isn't by CoHo, but her books are perfect for summer and can't be compared. To be honest, I'd recommend any of her books that I've read by her for summer besides Ugly Love. Maybe Someday is Hoover's lightest book so far and for that reason, it's the best to read during the season. Check out my review here. 


1.) Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson
Last but not least is a book that I'm sure will end up on so many lists this week. Since You've Been Gone is the epitome of a summer read. Not only is it set in the summer, but it has a fun unique plot. While it is long for a contemporary, it flew by so quickly.

T5W: Rainy Day Reads

For this, I'm going to be showing you some fun and fast paced books perfect for a day where you can't really get out. Here they are!

5.) Did I Mention I Love You? by Estelle Maskame
Did I Mention I Love You? (or DIMILY) for short, is the epitome of a quick read. It's super addicting and it'll make you need to pick up the next book ASAP. DIMILY is a young adult contemporary read, but it doesn't just touch on the romance. Check out my mini review here.

4.) Forbidden by Kimberely Griffiths Little
Forbidden is the opening novel of a historical fiction fantasy set in the Mesopotamian desert. The book is pure entertainment with a quick pace. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, which is out now. If you want to know more of my thoughts on the book, visit my review!

3.) The Dead List by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Armentrout is a master at writing addicting reads perfect for a rainy day. The Dead List takes the cake though! This thriller novel can actually be found on the wattpad app for free. The novel does take a dark turn or few, but it was so much fun to read. I wrote a full review for this one as well, so feel free to read it here!

2.) Defy by Sara B. Larson
Defy is yet another opening novel to a trilogy. The book follows Alexa, a girl who crossdresses as a male in order to be part of the prince's guard. The story kicks off in the first fifty pages when Alexa is taken hostage along with the prince and her best friend.  While I didn't love the first book, the series as a whole is so good! 1.) The Pact by Karina Halle
Last but not least is (new?) adult romance. The novel chronicles the love story of Steph and Linden, two best friends who love each other but don't have the guts to tell each other their feelings. The plot is simple enough, but I couldn't get enough of the characters! A long, long time ago I did a review of this book. You've been warned. It was in my early days when I wasn't sure how to actually write a review. :D

Top Five Wednesday: Least Favorite Books in Finished Series

 Hey guys and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni and today I will be participating in the weekly meme Top 5 Wednesday hosted by Lainey from gingerreadslainey on youtube! If you want more info about the group, check out our goodreads page here!

So this week's topic was actually our least favorite books in our favorite series. However, I wanted to switch it up and featured instead my least favorite book from my finished series.

5.) Defy by Sara B. Larson
Defy is the opening novel of Larson's series with the same name. The fantasy trilogy follows Alexa, the best fighter of her kingdom who just so happens to cross-dress as a boy so that she won't be put into breeding houses. One fateful night leaves her captive with her best friend and the prince, and things take off from there. This is my least favorite of the series because Alexa is a much more whiner and weaker character than she is in the books. However, I am really happy that I continued with the series, because it kept on getting better as it progressed. Here is my review for the series.

4.) Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
Sweet Evil is also an opening novel of Higgins' Sweet trilogy, which just so happens to have a fourth book that is in Kai's (the male protagonist) point of view.  When I read Sweet Evil, Anna's voice really irritated me, especially because she seemed holier than thou. I really warmed up to her character as the series progressed and ended up really loving the final two books. Here is my review of the fourth book in the series!

3.) Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
I'll just put it out there: Daemon is a douche canoe in the first book and I couldn't stand him. I warmed up to him (just like Katy did) in the later books, but his character made me not like the first book as much as I wanted to. 

2.) Of Neptune by Anna Banks
Of Neptune was the third and final book in Banks' Serena Legacy series. Unfortunately, I didn't really see the point in this last novel. The second book concluded the story pretty well and Of Neptune didn't add to the world at all. In my opinion, the series should have been a duology.
 

1.) Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake
Girl of Nightmares is the sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood, and is the concluding noel of the duology. Much like Of Neptune, I didn't see the point to this. The story dragged for me and did not peak my interest. I would've much rather read the first book and left it at that.

Top 5 Wednesday: Books I DNF

Hey guys and welcome back to my blog! Today I will be participating in a weekly meme I haven't for quite a while: Top 5 Wednesday! T5W was made by Lainey from gingerreadslainey.

Today's topic are five books that we DNF. If you don't know, DNF stands for "did not finish". All of these books might be on here for a different reason. Just because I didn't finish them doesn't mean they aren't good reads!

I am actually planning on read all five of these books. I only read a couple pages of each, but put it down for another book. Hopefully I'll get to these books this year!

5.) The Body Electric by Beth Revis
This is a scifi novel by Beth Revis, who also wrote the Across the Universe trilogy. I adore this trilogy, and was about 30 pages in when I put it down about a year ago. I actually really liked it, and I have no idea why I put it down! Just talking about this book makes me want to read it!

4.) Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Cruel Beauty is a very popular Beauty and the Beast retelling. I bought this a while back from BookOutlet, and read the first couple pages. I wasn't in the mood for it, and didn't want to force myself to read it. If I did that, I would've just compromised my reading experience. I've heard that this is pretty dark and gritty, so I'll have to be in the right mindset to read it.

3.) Searching for Someday by Jennifer Probst
So I made a pretty big mistake with this new adult read! I read the first twenty or so pages, and then just flipped through it to see what the pacing would be like. Unfortunately, I complete spoiled myself. I'm  waiting until I don't clearly remember what I spoiled myself for.

2.) Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead
Here's the thing: I really liked the first three books of the Vampire Academy series. The fourth book? Not so much. As the fifth book in the VA series, I had pretty high expectations before  I read the fourth one. I read about forty pages and wasn't feeling it. I'd rather  have a good experience than not, so I'll just read this when the time is right.

1.) The Rose Society by Marie Lu
Still sitting as currently reading on my goodreads account,  the Rose Society is the highly anticipated sequel it the Young Elites. I really liked what I read, but school got in the way. I'll probably be reading this one in the next couple weeks, so this will be a dnf for a (hopefully) short time.
