DISCUSSION | What Do I Value in Film Adaptations?

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today we're going to be discussing book adaptations. Whether it be television shows, movies, web series, etc., book adaptations are abundant. 

For today, I'm going to self reflect on my experience watching YA book to film adaptations, and ask myself,  "What do I look for in an adaptation?" As a reader, do I look for accuracy and staying true to the source material? Do I hope that the adaptation stays true to the heart of book, but am okay with certain changes? As a viewer, do I  care that a film is even adapted from something, or am I just looking for a quality film? When the two intersect, reader and viewer, what do I value the most?

As a critical reader and viewer, I want whatever media I consume to be first-rate. I've come to learn that what I value most in an adaptation is dependent on my relationship to the book. For instance, I read The Darkest Minds years ago, and frankly, did not enjoy the book that much. If I were to watch the film, I would hope that the film's plot followed that of the book, and that key scenes were the same or similar. However, I wouldn't mind if a character's name or appearance was changed. I also wouldn't mind if the plot was altered, if the adaptation maintained the core of the novel. This is not the same for an adaption of a book that I loved, though. When The Fault in Our Stars was coming to theaters, I absolutely loved the book. I was so worried that the movie wouldn't include certain scenes, even lines, from the source material. I don't care about this for The Darkest Minds, but I did for The Fault in Our Stars, because I had a much stronger connection to the source material at the time. When I'm watching an adaption but haven't read the book, I then simply look for well-produced and well-acted entertainment. I have never read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so when I watch the film, I don't compare it to its source material. Instead, I take in the movie as a separate entity, as individual. When I do this, I tend to enjoy the film more, as I'm not nit-picking the movie, and instead taking everything all in. Even then, some film adaptations have fallen short.


It is not a secret that Young Adult Adaptations have had a tumultuous relationship with critics. Some films and franchises, like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are critically applauded. Other adaptations, such as Twilight, Percy Jackson, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, are critically reviled. Let's look at some of the most recent films based on young adult literature, and their Rotten Tomatoes scores, as of 8 August 2018. 

• Love, Simon - 91%
• Maze Runner: The Death Cure - 41%
• Every Day - 63%
• Midnight Sun - 17%
• Ready Player One - 73%
• The Darkest Minds - 19%
• Everything, Everything - 47%
• The Miseducation of Cameron Post - 80%
• Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - 63%
• Allegiant - 12%

As you can tell from this sample of 10 movies, YA adaptations are a mixed bag. The scores above aren't a grade, exactly, but the percent of critics that enjoyed the movie. Out of these ten, five of them were "fresh", or above a 60 percent approval rating. These "fresh" movies range from a 63% approval rating to a 91% percent approval rating. The other five, however, have much lower approval ratings, ranging from 12% to 47 percent. The average percent of these 10 movies is 50.5%. This isn't a horrible score, but shows that, at least with critics, there is much more room to improve upon when it comes to YA adaptations.

We might not all agree with critics, or even watch movies critically, but the evidence is clear: there are some bad film adaptations, and some quality ones. However, I would argue that these film critics aren't reviewing the movie based on whether the movie stayed true to the book. These critics are professionals and know what to look for in movies to determine is something was well made or not. Odds are, they haven't read the book the film is based on, and if they have, they would try to keep the two separate from each other. Since I am both reader and viewer,  it can be difficult to separate book from movie. When I do, I get the most rewarding results. 

I can with strong conviction that Love, Simon was an amazing film. I also thought the book, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, was equally amazing. When I watched the movie though, I didn't go in thinking, "I can't wait for this specific scene, etc.!" Instead, I immersed myself in the movie and attempted to not make comparisons. Because of this, I was able to shrug off changes made and just enjoy the movie for what is was. Since the movie also stayed true to the majority of the book, I am able to watch it with the book in mind, and still enjoy it! 

My resolution, from here on out, is to separate adaptations from the source material upon first watching. That way, I am not nit-picking the movie, and I am just watching the film for what it is. If the movie follows the book closely and is good, that is the best of both worlds! But if the film takes major detours, there is a better a chance I'll still enjoy it since I'm watching as a film and not an adaptation. If I watch the movie and dislike it, it's not because the movie made changes from the book, as that's to be expected. Instead, it will be because it simply was not executed well.

Mini Movie Reviews | Passengers, Baby Driver, Before I Fall

Hey everyone and welcome back (or to!) my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be doing some mini movie reviews on what I have seen recently. I've been seeing a ton of movies with my sister since we're both off of school until the school year starts. Whether it is from redbox, on tv, or at the movies, I'll be reviewing some of the movies I've been seeing!

Passengers
Release Date: December 22, 2016
Run Time: 1 hour, 56 minutes
Genre: Scifi/Romance
Rating: PG-13

Spoiler: I really didn't like Passengers. I thought that Passengers would be this thrilling space opera, and instead it's a romance film just set in space. The main conflict isn't that the ship is breaking down, and death is imminent. Nope, the main conflict is a moral one! There is a lot of moping around and longing looks, and it was so irritating. Plus, this movie is sleep inducing. I mean, I was literally falling asleep watching this movie. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are huge talents, but the dialouge was flat, the plot mind-numbing, and the characters weren't compelling at all. It's obvious that Pratt and Lawrnece do the best with what they are given, but they're best isn't enough to make the movie good, even bearable. What this movie needs is a better script. I would have been fine watching a romance film in space with moral conflicts if the script was just written better. The script was the nail in the coffin for me. It didn't help that the pacing was all over the place either. There were some thrilling sequences, and then right after were slow, romance-y scenes. The tonal shift gave me whiplash. I give Passengers a D.

Adaption Talk: 13 Reasons Why | Tape 1, Side A

I wasn't planning on watching the Netflix adaption of 13 Reasons Why anytime soon, and I wasn't planning on this post either. But the adaption dropped today, and I just couldn't NOT watch the first episode. And let me tell you, it was downright amazing. 

I was at most 14 years old when I read Thirteen Reasons Why. At the time, I wasn't old enough to comprehend how cruel the world and people can be. Now I'm 17, and though I'm still a dreamer, I have learned of some harsher realities. Way back when I read the book, I thought that some of the things that happened to Hannah were inconceivable. Now I know that some people are just mean and mistakes are made and things spiral. 

Watching the TV show, I was transported back to when I read the book. I remember staying up until 2 am and not being able to put it down. The show has the same exact feeling. Right as I finished the first episode, I wanted to start the second. But then I decided to write this post, because I want to urge all of you to find a way and watch this series. 

TTT: My Favorite Book to TV Adaptions!

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I am participating in Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Broke and Bookish. This week's topic is honoring fall TV, but we were able to put our own twist on it. In order to stay book-related, I'm showcasing my favorite book to TV adaptions! Also, I realize it's a Thursday. Let's ignore how late I am, shall we?

This list is from my least favorite to my most favorite!

7.) Shadowhunters
This series, which is based off of The Mortal Instruments, needs a lot of fine tuning. The narrative of the first season was shaky, and it went places that didn't make sense. However, there were a couple episodes that did stand out. I'm looking forward to seeing how the second season will improve.

6.) Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl is a guilty pleasure.  I think of it like candy: it leaves you satisfied for a little bit, but it has no substance. The characters is what saves the series, not the plots. However, I can't say whether or not it is a good adaption, since I haven't read the source material. If you have, let me know!

5.) Pretty Little Liars
While I've never read the books that this show is based off of, I can say one thing: the television show is entertaining. I don't think the past two seasons have been good by any means, but they've kept my attention. I'm excited to see how the series will end this fall!

4.) Shannara Chronicles
The Shannara Chronicles debuted last year on MTV. While I didn't love the show by any means, it was entertaining and I think this upcoming season will exceed the first. The series has a great balance between romance and adventure, and I'm liking it a lot more than I am Shadowhunters right now.

3.) Roswell
To be honest, I forgot that Roswell is a book adaption! The television series has such a strong sense of self that it is hard to remember that is started out as a book series. If you haven't watched Roswell, I strongly encourage you to! The alien teen drama isn't as cheesy as you might think it is. 

2.) Vampire Diaries
A couple years ago, Vampire Diaries would have no doubt made the top of my list. Unfortunately, the last couple of seasons have just fallen short of the magic that was in the third and fourth seasons. The eighth season is its last, and I'm not ready yet to say goodbye.

1.) The 100
The 100 blew my mind away! I wasn't necessarily interested in the series at first, but I was convinced to watch it and my expectations were met and surpassed. Out of the three seasons that have been released, the second is my favorite. I love the television show so much that I actually read the source material! The show and the book series are so different, so I can't easily compare the two.  

Anticipated Book to TV Adaptions

1.) A Darker Shade of Magic
If you didn't know, I read A Darker Shade of Magic over the summer. I didn't love it, but I did find it entertaining! I think the book would be excellent as a television series, and possibly answer the questions I have. Of course, the sequels can do that as well!

2.) Shatter Me
This better come out in the next two years! It's been over a year since I've finished the Shatter Me trilogy, and I'd love to revisit the world! I think the television show would be great, and I think all the characters would translate well to screen, especially Kenji!


3.) A Series of Unfortunate Events
Last but certainly not least, A Series of Unfortunate Events! I actually have only read the first two books of the series, but I plan of fixing that problem. A Series of Unfortunate Events was adapted into a movie, but I think it would be better as a television series. Plus, Netflix is doing it, and they always produce excellent tv.

MOVIE REVIEW | Nerve

Nerve was such a thrilling movie and I had so much fun watching it! I did have some faults here and there, but the pros definitely outweighed the cons. If you don't know, Nerve is based off of the YA novel of the same name written by Jeanne Ryan. The plot centers around Venus, or Vee. She is a shy upcoming college freshman who is anything but outgoing. Vee decides to become a player in a Nerve, a game like truth or dare without the truth. The watchers give out dares to players, and the more dangerous they are, the more money the players receive. The movie was released on July 27th, and I saw it on the 31st. I'm going to review the movie in three parts, one for each act.

Adaption Talk: Shadowhunters S1E9 - Rise Up

Hey guys and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni and today I'll be doing another adaption talk of Shadowhunters, the TV adaption of the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. As with every adaption talk, my thoughts will be listed below as I watch the episode! Hope you enjoy! :D

1.) Last week's episode was my favorite of the year, so hopefully this won't disappoint!

2.) I already like Simon's reaction to his vampirism.

3.) Kat McNamara's acting is really strong with these scenes about Simon. It's actually really believable that she cares about him.

4.) The whole Forsaken plot is throwing me off....what's the point of all of City of Glass if they're going to do this to the plot?

5.) Why are Jace and Clary kissing right now? Their relationship works so well because they know how to balance priorities.

6.) I don't like how Magnus isn't as strong of a character as he is in the novel. Magnus knows what he wants and is confident. This doesn't seem like the same person.

 7.) Why is Meliorn even a character.... he serves no point really.

8.) Even though Alec's plot is drastically different from the books, I'm interested to see how it will play out.

9.) The scene with Simon, Clary, and his mom was SO good!

10.) Shade THROWN by quarterback Alec Lightwood to wide receiver Robert Lightwood!

11.) In Simon's case, I would be happy that my best friend gave me some more time with my friends and family!

12.) Okay, Dom's line "Jace Wayland is Switzerland." is so Jace, but the line wasn't delivered well at all. It didn't seem sassy!

13.) The fact that I get excited for any scene with Simon is saying something! He's such a strong actor.

14.) I like the set up for this situation between Clary and Simon at Hotel DuMort. I like that it tests the boundaries of their friendship. 

15.) Aw man, poor Magnus. :( At least they're drawing out Malec's relationship. Unlike SOME relationships. *cough* Clace *cough*

16.) I like that Lydia is a really complex character. Hopefully she won't be an antagonist of every episode!


17.) I completely adore Simon and Clary's friendship! <3

18.) Downworlders and Shadowhunters have been fighting for hundreds of years. One speech won't change it. It's why we have this wonderful thing called City of Glass!

19.) Loved the whole pun-off thing between Raphael and Luke!

20.) Paraba-WHYY stop fighting! Also, what the heck Jace! Best scene so far when he said he'd want to die before they were on different sides. *claps*

21.) Alec you're breaking my heart just like you did Jace's.

22.) While Simon and Clary's friendship grew stronger, Jace and Alec's crumpled.

23.) "You're still you. I'm still me." SO GOOD! Also, good music in the background. It actually fit the mood.

24.) When you're such a big Sizzy fan you have to look away when Izzy kisses another guy.

25.) Nice ending! It's making me anticipate the next episode.

So, it was a pretty good episode! It didn't blow me away, but there were several scenes that did. Every and any scene between Kat (Clary) and Alberto (Simon) were amazing! The fight scene between Matthew (Alec) and Dom (Jace) was really strong. I think that the show more accurately portrays friendship. I really feel for them in that sense, but the chemistry is really lacking when they try to do romantic relationships. So far, Matthew and Harry (Magnus) are the weakest to me.

I'm excited to see what will come in the next episode in the alternate universe! The plots have strayed very far away from each other, but the TV show still is intriguing.

Adaption Talk: Shadowhunters S1 E7: Major Arcana

Hey guys and welcome back! I'm Genni and today I'll be sharing my thoughts on the seventh episode of Shadowhunters! This will be my third adaption talk of the television show this far.


1.) That whole line that Magnus had about Beyonce riding a dinosaur? Not only was it weird, but it seemed forced.

2.) I wish that Clary wasn't blowing Simon off as much, even though she is doing something really important. 

3.) My mom is watching this with me, and when Luke said to stay outside the precinct to not garner more attention, my mom just replied that both Clary and Jace's hair already attract too much attention. So true! Both of their looks pretty bad. 

4.) I don't like how the show is basically making runes give you superpowers. 

5.) Jace and Clary are just awkward together. They have practically no chemistry.

6.) I love when Clary slapped Jace! His face was so awkward! :D

7.) Alec was so bad at trying to woo that lady. Quick thinking though! That was a really fun scene! I really like him and Izzy's brother/sister relationship.

8.) This night vision effect looks so bad it's funny!

9.) "That looks exactly like the mortal cup." Well, that's because it is.  

10.) I see what people are talking about with Clary and Alec's chemistry! But Alec and Magnus is so much better.

11.) Let me guess, the old lady is the demon.

12.) Izzy's necklace looks so cheesy when it blinks. 

13.) "What the unlock rune again?" - Clary  "Open sesame" - Jace, when he kicks in the door. Ughhhh so bad!

14.) Come on Clary, be a friend! Simon needs you!


15.) Alberto Rosende is literally the best part of the show. He plays Simon so well! 

16.) Why does Clary have her witchlight while all the others are using their seraph blades?

17.) I like that they are portraying Clary as this powerless girl who doesn't know how to use her powers. The past couple episodes they did the opposite of that, so I'm glad that they are making her seem just as helpless as she was in the first book. 

18.) Please don't tell me Clary is going to be kidnapped now that she got the cup out. 

19.) That isn't Jace. Can it be more obvious? 

20.) The demons in Shadowhunters look like the monster in the Real Cost ads that personify cigarettes. Except, the ad monster looks better. 
 
21.) "Demons. Long story." Except it is not a long story. It would just take a couple seconds to say that demon shapeshifted into Jace and she got the cup out. 

22.) It's sad to see one of your favorite book couples have barely any chemistry on screen. It has improved though!

23.) Okay, I liked the line where Clary said that she does pay attention to some of the stuff Jace says to her and how he has to pay attention to the details. One of my favorite Clary lines yet.

24.) ....Did they just kiss?

25.) Fingers crossed that Jace won't pull away from Clary and be all emotionally guarded!

26.) That kiss was a game changer. I do think they have chemistry, I just think the problem is that they are both given weak lines. 

27.) I feel so bad for Simon. :( I just wish someone would help him!

So those are my thoughts on the seventh episode of Shadowhunters. I think that this was a much stronger episode than the sixth. This episode made me start caring for other characters besides just Simon, though he is still the most compelling one of the cast. I am starting to ship Clary and Jace, but they are much stronger in the books. The television show is improving every episode, and I am actually looking forward to the next one! In comparison to Shannara Chronicles, another YA adaption on MTV, I think it falls behind. Shannara Chronicles is still a much more stronger show in its plot and character development.

Adaption Talk: The 100 S3E4 - Watch the Thrones

The 100 is one of my favorite shows on air and never fails to disappoint. In case you haven't read some of my other Adaption Talk posts, you should now that I list my thoughts as I watch the episode.

*There will be spoilers for the last two seasons and this episode, so be wary!*

1.) I hate that Bellamy has so much guilt for so many deaths. Not only did he open the doors of Mount Weather with Clarke, but this too. He's killed more people than Clarke, so wouldn't he be considered Wanheda?

2.) I know Jasper is in mourning, but I wish he would just accept Monty's help.

3.) I am so ready for Lexa to kick some ass!

4.)  Clarke as queen? I'm game. Though is she ready for such a big leadership position again?

5.) Poor Bellamy! :( In the last episode, he didn't seem too fazed about Gina's death, but that might have just been shock. 

6.) I sincerely hope that Pike doesn't become Chancellor. He's going to screw up the alliances with the Grounders!

7.) Licnoln is such a badass. Him and Octavia make the perfect couple. 

8.) Is that seriously the dropship? How long has it been since the season one finale where it was all blown up?

9.) The Linctavia game is strong this episode!  I kind of want Lincoln and Octavia to join the grounders and leave the Ark.

10.) It's so obvious that Clarke still has feelings for Lexa even after the whole entire Mount Weather betrayal.

11.) Bellamy better not become a Grounder-hater. Lincoln has been there for him time and time again, isn't that enough evidence to suggest not all grounders are evil?

12.) It's about to happen. I'm so looking forward to Lexa kicking this guys butt. 

13.) Things aren't looking too good for Lexa... but I know she's gonna win.

14.)  Aw man, cheesy slow mo is in play.

15.) Oh my god. I was not expecting that. But hey, there are no rules expect a person dying. That was an amazing  action sequence.

16.) Bellamy is not thinking right. What is he doing? Killing 300 more grounders won't make him feel any better about himself. 

17.) Thank god Monty is finally sticking up for himself! Does Jasper not realize that Monty is suffering too? It's sad to see such a strong friendship dissolve.

18.) He did not just spill all of Finn's ashes!

19.) Well, I'm disappointed there wasn't a Clexa scene. I'm more of a Bellarke shipper, but I still like them.

20.) I wish Marcus was Chancellor! Pike cannot reject the brand! He seriously is starting a war that doesn't need to happen. 

So I really liked this episode! It is a good insight to how the rest of the season is going to go. Though I don't like the idea that there is going to be a war against the grounders. Another thing I want to see more are more Bellarke scenes. They were apart for a long while in season 2 and haven't really spent some time together since the season 2 finale. Also, what happened to that whole City of Light plot? I want some Murphy! I wish there was a scene with Raven in here, too. Are her and Wick still together?

Even though I really like the season so far, I hope it gets just a smidgen more intense. I feel like these four episodes are setting up for a great season. It's a bit weird watching the show while reading the book, just because they are so different than each other!

Adaption Talk : Shannara Chronicles S1

Right before The Shannara Chronicles premiered on MTV, so many people were talking about it. Now that the show has been on for a couple  weeks, I haven't seen as much talk. I think that this show should get more buzz, because I am really liking it so far!

It's so much fun to watch and the actors portray their characters so well. The cast has so much chemistry with each other and the world building is phenomenal. I have been watching this with my mom, and both of us have never gotten confused before, which is hard to do for a fantasy series.

The way that the show has been going and taking the plot is so intriguing. The first couple episodes are so well done, which is weird for a first season. When you look at Vampire Diaries, another adaption based off a book series,  their first season was so weak compared to their others. If that is the way Shannara Chronicles will be, then I can't wait for the second season. I can see this becoming one of my favorite TV shows if Shannara Chronicles continues to be this strong. 

One of my favorite aspects of Shannara Chronicles is that it has a great balance between the romance and adventure plot lines. The love triangle in the adaption is so well done. It is refreshing to see a love triangle that is actually between two girls and a guy instead of the other way. Eretria and Amberle both represent different things to Will. While Eretria represents the forbidden and dangers of the world and is darkly intriguing, Amberle is the acceptance that Will has never gotten but has always wanted. Right now, I like Will with Amberle together more!

The Shannara Chronicles expands on its world with every episode. While they do this with the trials Will and the main cast faces, they also use the secondary characters very well. Bandon, a boy who can predict the future of people's deaths, is one of my favorite side characters. I'm excited to see how his story arc progresses.


As of right now, I am watching the seventh episode of the first season. I'm sad to think that the season is going to be wrapping up in the next three episodes. Wathcing Pykon truly shows the promise of the series. The Shannara Chronicles easily builds the tension and suspense throughout the episode and series as a whole. There are so many twists and turns that I never see coming. I can't wait to see how the series will end! Hopefully the series will be renewed for a second season!

Adaption Talk: Thoughts While Watching Shadowhunters S1 E3

Hey guys! I'm Genni and today I'll be talking about the third episode of the Shadowhunters TV show. What I did was just listeed my thoughts as the episode went on. I really liked doing this, and if you do as well, I'll be continuing it! I probably won't be doing it for every episode, but every few.

1.) Clary and Jace actually have some chemistry together, but their scene learning about the seraph blade was pretty cheesy.

2.) Meliorn looks so gross it's not even funny. What happened to the Seelie being the most beautiful beings ever?

3.) "Oh my god. They're vampires." Well yes Clary, that would be expected out of blood sucking creatures that have fangs.

4.) Clary and Jace? Have you ever heard a personal bubble? You literally just met him..STOP.

5.) This is Camille, right? I never pictured her like this at all..

6.) Isabelle isn't subtle at all when she's fishing for information. I don't appreciate how they are making Isabelle so sexualized she doesn't even have a personality. 

7.) "You remind me of me, Alec. A loyal friend standing in the shadow...Don't make the same mistake I did..." Pretty good scene between Hodge and Alec. I liked the subtle foreshadowing.

8.) How could Jace have expected Clary to not fall under the vampires charms? She was raised as a mundane! I thought mundanes were supposed to be the ignorant ones. 

9.) I don't feel comfortable seeing Simon make out this much. Haha!

10.) "We've been breached." You're in a hotel, not a freaking war camp. Are they seriously doing this to Simon so easily into the season?

11.) I love Simon! Alberto is the best actor on this show so far. This is my face whenever there is a scenes with Alberto. 

12.) The scene with Clary and Jace are some of Dom's strongest so far. He's definitely improved since the first show, but he's still pretty bad. 

13.) Clary :"You've never been bitten? You've never been in love.." Jace:"...It fades, just like love." Oh god here I think Jace and Clary scenes are strong but then they have cheesy lines like this.

14.) Oh god the graphics for the vampires erupting are so bad. Why do we have to see a skeleton in some orange sparkles?


15.) "You really know how to hurt a guy." Random vampire, you have no idea. :D *cue Simon's heartbreak*

16.) Wow, I really do appreciate some slow mo walking in a pack. Not. The cheese factor in this show is off the charts.

17.) This scene actually makes me feel nervous. They have changed so much of the books, that it makes me intrigued because I don't even know what is going to happen. 

18.) "Jace Wayland! Remember who your friends are." Is that foreshadowing for what happens with Hodge?

19.) I low key ship Clary and Simon together on the show even though I hate a romantic relationship with them in the books. This unrequited love makes me feel so bad for Simon. It's probably because Clary has way more chemistry with Simon right now. 

20.) We all know that Alec hates Clary so much because he's trying to protect Jace and he's jealous. I'm over it. I already read a whole entire book with Alec being an ass-hat and I'd rather not have to do it all over again. 

21.) We're finally seeing a scene that makes it seem as if Alec and Jace are parabatai. Thank goodness! Also, Alec is totally looking at Jace's lips in this shot of the episode!

22.) Wow, that pumping vein. Way to be subtle, really. I'm excited to see Alberto in those scenes!

So yeah, I definitely had my issues with the episode, but it was a lot better than the first two for me. Dominic Sherwood, the actor who plays Jace, improved a lot this episode in comparison. The CGI was still really bad, but it's a minute detail. My favorite aspect still remains Alberto. He's the strongest actor so far in the series, and I think it is because at the time of filming, he was the only one who read all the books. You can tell he has a full feel of the character.

Though they made a lot of changes in the series, the plot still interests me even if they are doing everything in the wrong order. I feel like if I watched this series without reading the books, I would be more into the series.
