BOOK TAG | Naughty or Nice?

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be doing a book tag! I absolutely love book tags, and when I saw this on czai's blog, The Blacksheep Reader, I knew I had to participate. The tag was originally created by Jenniely on her blog, The Page of Jenniely, so make sure to check out her post as well!

This tag takes a look at some bookish sins. In order to determine whether or not you've been a good bookish person this year, you go through the list and see which ones you are guilty of! Without further ado, here is the tag!

Received an ARC and not reviewed it

This is a big YIKES for me! I have a couple books on Netgalley that I haven't finished yet, but have started! I am planning on finishing them, but priorities (school, mental health, and family) take precedence. This year, I haven't read The Raging Ones Krista and Becca Ritchie, Mirage by Somaiya Daud, and the anthology Toil and Trouble. Maybe I have an aversion to purple book covers?? eeek!

Have less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley

Not guilty! I actually worked really hard this year to get my NG rate to 80 percent, and I want to be at 90 eventually, but that will mean getting more books and reviewing them to even out the ones that I got but didn't end up finishing. Right now, I have a good 84 percent. After I finish my ARC, I think it'll be 85 or 86 percent!

Rated a book on goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)

Ummmm...YES. I do this all the time, and honestly I probably won't stop. I don't do it on purpose, but I'm a busy person and I just totally forget which ones I saw "review to come!" and which ones I don't. **hides in a corner**

Folded down the page of a book
Y'all....why is this a bad thing?? I totally dog-ear my pages. I'm one of those readers who doesn't mind having my books be a little worn down. When I really love a book, I'll dog ear pages that I like.

Accidentally spilled on a book

Actually, no! I don't drink or eat a lot when I'm reading, and if I do, it's water in a bottle.

DNF a book this year

Considering that I haven't completed three ARCs I received earlier this year, yes, I've done this. I'm sure there are others that I attempted to read, but they obviously didn't make an impact and I forgot about them! Technically I DNF'd Nightblood by Elly Blake, which I got to around the halfway mark. I didn't mean to DNF the book, I just got so busy. I do plan on finishing it though!

Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it

I actually really don't like buying books. I'm a pretty frugal person, and I can't justify buying books for myself that often. I normally only buy books for  university.

Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework)
ALWAYS.

Skim read a book

If you know me at all, you'd know this is a big YES for me. I'm a pretty impatient reader who needs instant gratification (my 7 year old is coming out), so I tend to read 100 or so pages, skim read the rest, and then go back and read all of it. I tend to it this a lot with romance novels because I just want the two characters to get together!!

Completely missed your Goodreads goal

Not guilty! I surpassed my reading goal this November, and at the time of writing this post, I have read 106 books this year, which is 6 more than my annual goal of 100.

Borrowed a book and not returned it to the library

This is blasphemy! I've always returned my library books. While I might have returned them late and gotten fees, I end up returning them eventually.

Broke a book buying ban

Like I mentioned before, I rarely buy books, so I don't need a book buying ban!

Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about

Lemme just check real quick...YES. I have forgotten reviews of Autoboyography by Christina Lauren (which is literally one of my favorite books of the year, good job Genni!), Ice Kissed by Amanda Hocking, Save the Date by Morgan Matson, and a couple mini movie reviews I just didn't put up. Some of them are semi-completed though, so maybe I'll salvage some.

Wrote in a book you were reading

Yes, and I don't think this is a huge "reading sin" either! I tend to write in textbooks and novels I read for school, and also poetry collections. I normally get a lot more out of poetry if I write in it. Of course, this is only books I own!

Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads

I'm sure, somewhere out there, is a book I've read and not added, but I'm usually up to par with goodreads. I love updating on there, so if I do forget a book, it's rare.

Borrowed a book and not returned it to a friend

I don't borrow books that often! I do have my best friend's copy of Restore Me that I borrowed right before university started, but I haven't given it back to her because we don't go to the same school. But I'm actually seeing her tomorrow and plan on returning it, so hah! I am still nice!

Dodged someone asking if they can borrow a book
me dodging those requests

Not this year, but honestly, is that such a bad thing? I'll say yes to my friends, but not people I don't know that well. I rarely buy books, so when I do, I value them a lot.

Broke the spine of someone else’s book

Considering I don't borrow people's books often, this is a no for me.

Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged

I mean, sometimes they get lost for a week or two, but they've always looked fine!

Sat on a book accidentally

LOL...no. But I have questions for the guily people! HOw? What? When?

So, I am guilty of 8 of 20! I think that's pretty decent, and puts me (barely) on the nice side of things! Of course, if we took away the dog ear-ing and writing, I would only be guilty of 6.

Have you been naughty or nice this year?

Thanks so much for stopping by and I'll see you soon with another post!

Happy Reading!

  1. Same here! I also don't mind them getting my books worn down. Sometimes I feel that the more worn down they are, the more feels I had with them. Some of my mass market paperbacks actually have too much folds and creases on the spine.

    1. I'm glad someone agrees! I totally agree, the wear and tear of a book shows how much love it's gotten over the years, even with different owners! I only own three or so mass market paperbacks, but I've seen those folds and creases on the spine at used book stores.

  2. I’m going to be doing this tag next week. I’m so bad at promising that reviews are coming and then not writing them. I read faster than I write reviews, so I’m always behind.

    1. I look forward to your answers AJ! I read faster than I write as well, and sometimes I just don't have enough to say about a book.

      Thanks for visiting AJ!

  3. I DNFed a lot this year, and I'm always guilty of reading when I should be doing other things, like cleaning the house!

    1. I'm sure I DNFed a lot, but I quickly forget because they (obviously) don't make the much of an impression. I do it all the time, but then I get pretty anxious, especially if I'm reading as a way to procrastinate schoolwork!

  4. Lol those purple covers! If it makes you feel any better, all three of those were disappointments for me.

    I always skim read too!

I'm teetering on that 89%/90% line on NG and it's so frustrating. I just want that 90% badge!

    1. I've heard that about all three from other bloggers as well! I think that's why I'm so hesitant to continue reading them. One of my goals next year is to get a solid 90% mark! I don't want to keep getting the badge and losing it, haha. Good luck Amber!

  5. I think DNFing needs to stop being considered a bad thing. Life is too short to push through books you aren't enjoying!! I also dog ear my own books, but I only do that when I want to mark a specific quote or scene. I would never dog ear a book from a library or a friend though :) Great answers!!

    1. I completely agree! Plus, why would I continue to read a book that I'm not enjoying if there are so many out there that I would enjoy more? I'm guilty of dog earing wherever I stop reading. I don't do it as often, but if I don't have anything near me, dog ear it is! Oh yeah, I don't dog-ear unless it's my book!

      Thanks for stopping by Erica!
