TAG | Cake Flavored Book Tag!

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be doing the Cake Flavored Book Tag! This tag was originally created by Cait from Paperfury, and I saw it recently on Jessica's blog, A GREAT Read! I normally don't do tags that often, but the cake was calling to me!

A Dark Book that You Loved

Throughout Reign the Earth, there is almost never a light-hearted moment. Things keep getting worse and worse for Shalia. The tension keeps ramping up, and Shalia gets herself in some very dangerous situations. The ending is heartbreaking, and I can't wait for the sequel.

A Favorite Light Read

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue was so much fun. While there are several moments when the book is more touching, the book is a ton of fun and made me laugh out loud. The narration is dead on, and I had such a great time listening to it.

A Book that Gave You Mixed Emotions

The Hating Game, while fun, left me a bit mixed on the romance. While Lucy and Joshua have chemistry, for sure, I didn't really ship them together. The humor didn't click for me, and there were some interactions that were meant to be sexy that didn't work for me.

A Book that You Recommend to Everyone

I think The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a book everyone should read. The book is about police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Not only is the book well written, but the subject matter is important to read about, whether or not you agree with the BLM movement, political affiliation, etc.

A Book You Started But Never Finished

Guys, I literally read the majority of Unteachable by Leah Raeder in one day. However, I was uncomfortable about the teacher/student relationship, and I didn't like the main protagonist, Maise, that well. I could easily finish the book, but I don't really want to.

A Book with Great Writing

Anything by Christina Lauren fits the bill for me. If I had to pick one though, it would be Autoboyography. The angst of a teenage romance is there, as well as the struggle of falling in love with someone who 1, doesn't want to admit their sexuality; 2, is committed to a religion that does not support gay rights; and 3, would be cut off from their family. I was so invested in Tanner and Sebastian's love story, and it's because Christina Lauren so expertly writes the romance and the conflict.

A Book that Left You Wanting More

Our Dark Stars left me wanting more. More time with the characters so they could be developed more, more time with the world so I understood its complexities, and more backstory so that the last act was worth it. Our Dark Stars was interesting, but it fell short for me.

Series with 4 or More Books

I didn't realize how many duologies and trilogies are being published right now until I had to go searching for a series on my read list! At first, I thought I would pick Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments, which his an oldie but a goodie. But then, I decided to give some love to The Witchlands series. There's five books to the series, and though only 2 have been published, I'm sure it's going to be epic!

A Book that Wasn't What You Anticipated

When I picked up Stay Sweet, I was expecting it to be a fluffy contemporary read. To my happy surprise, Stay Sweet was much more complex! Cate is struggling with moving on from her small town and to start anew in college, and because of that, she is trying to have the best summer of her life. I also was pretty anxious during the summer before my first year at university, and I loved the care Siobhan Vivian put into the book.

So that was the Cake Flavored Book Tag! Feel free to join in on the fun. :)

If you decide to use my graphics, please tell me beforehand and link it back to this post or my homepage!

Thanks so much for stopping by and I'll see you soon with another post!

Happy Reading!

  1. This tag is super cute! I need to try out this tag eventually sometime. I really enjoyed Reign the Earth. I wasn't expecting the book to be THAT dark. It was a pleasant surprise.

    1. I loved Reign the Earth! I also wasn't expecting it to be dark. For some reason, I thought it would have the feel of The Wrath and the Dawn - dark, but not that much. I was wrong, but also pleasantly surprised, like you mentioned. :)

  2. Fun tag! Reign the Earth looks really good, but I didn't realize it was so dark! And Truthwitch is a book I've been meaning to get to...

    1. Thanks Greg! Yeah, one of the "love interests" (who is in no way an actual love interest) is very abusive and does some horrible things throughout the book, especially in the third act. Truthwitch and its sequel were a bit hard for me to get into, but the books both pick up a lot after the first 100 pages! I hope you enjoy them. :)

  4. Based on the cover, I assumed that Stay Sweet was a simple contemporary, I'm intrigued about it now. I think I finished Unteachable but it left me feeling weird.

    1. There are some really fun moments, but it had more depth than I expected! Yeah, I felt the same way. What I did read was just in a day, and then with some time away from it, I decided it was better to put it down.

    1. Thanks Angela!! Simple contemporaries are fun, but I always love contemporaries with more depth. :)

  6. Yum, cake! Did you make those graphics? They're so cute! I've heard lots about Gentleman's Guide, it does seem light and fun! I feel like it's kinda good and bad that you wanted more from that one book? Sounds like you were invested, but that's disappointed you didn't all the development and stuff to make it better in the end :-/

    1. Exactly my reaction! I did make the graphics! I am pretty proud of them. :) I think they're the most professional ones I've made so far, but there are a couple things I want to fix now, haha!

Gentleman's Guide was amazing!! I also agree that it is a mix of good/bad about Our Dark Stars! I was getting invested in the plot, but the character depth just wasn't there, and I would have loved to learn more about the characters.

      Thanks for visiting Kristen!
