Waiting on Wednesday #54

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be participating in Waiting on Wednesday, which is also called Can't Wait Wednesday! WoW is now hosted by Tressa @ Wishful Endings! Make sure to check out her blog after this. :)

Today I'll be showcasing American Panda by Gloria Chao, out Feburary 6, 2018!

An incisive, laugh-out-loud contemporary debut about a Taiwanese-American teen whose parents want her to be a doctor and marry a Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer despite her squeamishness with germs and crush on a Japanese classmate.

At seventeen, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents' master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a preapproved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies.

With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can't bring herself to tell them the truth--that she (1) hates germs, (2) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (3) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese.

But when Mei reconnects with her brother, Xing, who is estranged from the family for dating the wrong woman, Mei starts to wonder if all the secrets are truly worth it. Can she find a way to be herself, whoever that is, before her web of lies unravels?

Why I'm Waiting

I just love this synopsis! American Panda is also own voices, so I'm looking forward to reading a racially diverse novel that comes from a place of authenticity! Plus, I've heard amazing early reviews! I'm also auto-approved on Netgalley, so I just downloaded this last night! I'm actually reading This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada, so hopefully I'll get to this soon!

Are you looking forward to American Panda?

Thanks so much for stopping by and I'll see you soon with another post!

Happy Reading!

  6. This sounds like a really interesting read! Your post is actually the first time I'm seeing this book, and the main character grappling with her identity as an Asian-American with her parents and brother is something I'd like to read more about. Thanks for sharing!

    1. So far, it's amazing! The main character is Taiwanese, but her love interest is Japanese, which definitely adds drama as Mei's family doesn't approve! I'm right in the thick of it right now, and really enjoying the book!
