With all the news swirling around about COVID-19, I know that many of us are feeling anxious, including myself. Plus, with professionals suggesting we distance ourselves socially, loneliness will surely creep in. Crazy Rich Asians is one of my most recent reads, and I had such a fun time reading it! After watching the movie a couple years back, I always wanted to read the source material, but I never got around to it. This semester, I am taking a class about book to movie adaptations, and was required to read Crazy Rich Asians! I had such a fun time immersing myself into this high-drama, extremely capitalist world where no one is good enough unless your the richest of the rich. It's nothing like my world, and I quite enjoyed escaping to another!

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

Nothing to See Here is such a delightful read. The novel follows Lillian, a 20-something year-old whose life is off-track. When she's asked to become a caretaker for two children who combust into flames when they get agitated, she decides to go along with it. Nothing to See Here is bizarre, hilarious (I laughed out loud multiple times), and heart touching.

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord

If you would rather read a YA novel, then feast your eyes (and your food desires) on Tweet Cute, a 2020 re-imagining of rom-com classic You've Got Mail. The chemistry between the two leads, Pepper and Jack, is spot on, filled with banter, awkwardness, and a strong bond.

I listened to this book on audio, and I had such a great time. It was the perfect audiobook to listen to as I did chores around my apartment - engaging, yet not so complicated that I had to give my whole entire focus to it. Pan's memoir, where she attempts to become more extroverted, was both comical and clever.

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Fix Her Up has taken the romance community by storm, and for good reason! I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this book, and I was completely enamored. I picked this up late at night, thinking I could get a couple chapters in before going to bed. Lo and behold, I got to around the 40 percent mark and realized it was way past my bed time. And don't be taken aback by the illustrated cover, this book is steamy. If you're going to read this in public, be prepared to blush and make sure no one is reading over your shoulder. For someone who has a horrible (nonexistent) poker face, I read this in the wonderful privacy of my bed. The emotional conflict was also done so well. I really related to Georgie and her insecurities about not being taken seriously, especially professionally. My only complaint about Fix Her Up was the ending. I felt it was too abrupt, and I wish that there was just another chapter. Fix Her Up is a standout romance release of this year!

I give Fix Her Up 4 out of 5 Flowers!

Stranger Things Book Tag!

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'm going to be doing a book tag! I haven't done one of these in a quick minute, but was actually thinking of creating my own Stranger Things book tag when I saw this on my feed. The first one I saw was Jessica from A GREAT Read, and it was made from Tracy at Cornerfolds. Check out their posts, which I hyperlinked.

I absolutely devoured the third season of Stranger Things, and I'm glad to see all the hype transferring into the book community. If Netflix really wanted to get money hungry, they'd do some middle grade/YA book series. Maybe it could focus on the mundane, like what happened in between the time jump of seasons 2 and 3, or other characters, like Eleven's "sister," who I didn't care too much about, to be honest.

Here's a quick low down about my feelings on ST3:

• I wish Nancy had more of a purpose, because it seemed like she was written for the love triangle in mind in the first and second seasons, and then was pushed aside when it all got resolved. 
• The cinematography was on point! The season was so beautiful and eye-catching.
• I thought the ending episode was fantastic. I laughed; I cried. 
• Robin and Erica are such stand outs, and I loved both of them so much. 
• The first couple episodes didn't feel distinct from each other, and I would like a bit more separation from episode to epsilon. I love having a season-long ARC (as we always do), but the singular episode plot lines felt a bit too similar in the first couple episodes.

I was hooked right as I opened Getaway Girl by Tessa Bailey. While romance novels are easy to interest me in general, I couldn't put this down! Getaway Girl opens with the protagonist, Addison Potts, attempting to crash her cousin's wedding when the groom, Elijah, is stood up. There's drama from the first page, as well as sparks between the two main characters. The novel never slowed down either, even as it nears 300 pages.

I actually don't read too much fantasy anymore. While it was one of my favorite genres when I was getting into reading, I find that I can't connect with the characters as much in a fantastical setting. However, the fantasy world of The Raging Ones would be interesting to experience, but just for a day or so, and then I'd like to come back to the real world, thankyouverymuch. The Raging Ones is set in a far future in a different galaxy and different planets. In this world, people are born knowing when they die. There are some who die before maturation, like Babes, and others who live past 100 years, such as Influentials. I wonder what it would be like to live in this world, where I know the day I was going to die, and if that would affect my actions and values.

10 Exceptional Summer Reads

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! Now that summer is in full swing, I wanted to give some recommendations to you. Below are 10 exceptional summer reads.

You might be thinking, "what really makes a book a 'summer read'?" Well, in my head, summer-y books usually have at least one of these attributes.

• Set in the summer or a summer-y location (beaches, pool, camp)
• People are given another set of circumstances different from their usual. For instance, a YA summer book isn't going to be about the set of characters studying for tests. No, these characters are worried about summer jobs and love lives. 
• The tone is light, and if the novel does have darker themes, there is humor to relieve some of tension.

This list is (obviously) not the "end all be all" of what requires a book to be a summer read. My list down below is contradictory, there's some books on here that match all these points, and some that match none. All of this is objective! If you are looking for a list of recommendations with moody tones and dark themes though, this list isn't for you. 

With all that out of the way, here are 10 reads that are perfect for the summer!

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

The Unhoneymooners has been raved about all over my Twitter feed, and for good reason. If you didn't know, Christina Lauren is one of my favorite authors, and they did not disappoint with their newest release, which is a hate-to-love romance that takes place in Maui. It's hilarious as well; I laughed out loud multiple times.

There's Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon

I had the absolute pleasure of reading an e-arc of There's Something About Sweetie earlier this year, and I absolutely fell in love with the book. I wish I had this novel when I was 16, when I was so insecure about myself. Reading about a fat MC like Sweetie was so inspiring, and this is by-far my favorite book of Menon's to date. Just writing about this makes me want to go back and reread it!

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I wouldn't be surprised at all if you've already heard of this book! Red, White, & Royal Blue was all over my twitter feed upon its release, and I was so glad it was getting all the attention it deserves. RW&RB is part m/m romance novel, part political drama, and part slice-of-life. I absolutely adore the novel, and there's definitely been times I've flipped through my copy just to read some of my favorite scenes.

TTT | Books I LOVE With Less Than 2,000 Ratings

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be participating in Top Ten Teusday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. I don't participate in TTT every week, but only when it strikes my fancy. 

This week's topic is books we love that have less than 2,000 ratings on goodreads. I don't give out a ton of five stars, so I'm going to be recommending both four and five star reads today. Also, I'm not going to add ARCs on here. There are several ARCs that I have read and enjoyed that are under 2,000 ratings, but that might change pretty quickly once the book is published. I am also writing this early, so all these books had less than 2,000 ratings on January 5th. I wanted to recommend books that I genuinely enjoyed and still remember, so I only put 9 on this list.

The Cha Cha Files: A Chapina Poetica by Maya Chinchilla

I read this poetry collection for a class, and it was amazing. There were some poems in here that didn't speak to me, but the majority of them were excellent.

 

Analee, In Real Life by Janelle Milanes

 The more I think of Analee, in Real Life, the more I enjoy the book. Analee was such a great MC, and her anxieties really spoke to me. If you want to know more of my thoughts, here's my review. 

Withering Rose by Katilyn Davis

Withering Rose is a Beauty and Beast retelling that I really enjoyed. Honestly, I haven't read this in a couple years and I've forgotten a lot, but I remember really liking it. I'm pretty sure I still have this on my kindle app, so I might just reread it. Here is my review. 

This Cruel Design by Emily Suvada

This Cruel Design is the sequel to Emily Suvada's debut, This Mortal Design. This sequel is thrilling and the ending outrageous in the best way possible. Here is my review.  

Sanctuary by Caryn Lix

I received an ARC of Sanctuary last year and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Sanctuary is a sci-fi thriller with a bit of romance, and I'm definitely reading the sequel that is coming out this year. Here is my review. 

 

The Raging Ones by Krista and Becca Ritchie

The Raging Ones is the first in a fantasy duology that took me by surprise. I read many mixed reviews, but I ended up enjoying the book a lot more than I thought. It was a bit slow at times, but the characters made up for it. Here is my review. 

 

Run Away With Me by Mila Gray

Run Away With Me is the third book in a contemporary romance series by Mila Gray. I love the first two books, and Run Away With Me wasn't an exception. In fact, it's my favorite of the three, and I seriously don't know why more people haven't read it! Here is my review.

 

Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen

Nyxia Unleashed is the sequel to Reintgen's debut novel, Nyxia. Though I didn't like Nyxia Unleashed as much, it did provide a lot of insight into the world and I'm looking forward to the final novel, which is due this year. Here is my review. 

Let the Wind Rise by Shannon Messenger

Let the Wind Rise is the final book in the Sky Fall series, which I loved. I read this years ago, so I don't remember the details, but I was very pleased with how it all turned out.

Adult Romance Starter Pack!!

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! Happy Valentine's Day! I'm Genni, and today I'll be sharing five books I recommend for someone who wants to start reading adult romance. 

Full disclaimer - I am not a pro when it comes to adult romance! I started reading romance earlier last year. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the best romances to start off with! I am still pretty new to romance as well and still have a lot to read.

Now, there is a method to this madness. I picked the following five books for specific reasons. I didn't give all of these books the elusive five out of five flower rating, but I did enjoy all of them. Each book does something different. Some veer towards erotica, other have a more women's fiction feel to them, and some are standouts due to their diversity.

Without further ado, here are five romance novels that are a great introduction into the genre!

I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

First up is I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. Sophie Kinsella is such a well loved and well known romance author. Confessions of a Shopaholic, anyone? While 11-year old me was obsessed with the movie, it wasn't until last year I read my first Sophie Kinsella book. Now, I'll be honest, I didn't absolutely love the book. But, it had a great blend of humor with deeper topics of self love and self confidence. I've Got Your Number is a book about Poppy, who loses her phone and engagement ring the night before meeting her fiance's parents. She freaks out, and when she finds a phone in the trash, she promptly uses it. The phone, however, is a company phone, and Sam needs it back. This leads to a lot of humor, awkward situations, and a wonderful ending. I think this is a great book to start off with for several reasons. First, it's a standalone. Kinsella is also a well established author, meaning you have a vast array of books to further your romance reading after. Lastly, it provides an introduction to the genre of romance novels that have a women's fiction focus.

2018 in Review | Best Books

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be looking back on some of my best reads of the year.  As of December 25, I've read 109 books, and there have been 13 standouts! I've had a wonderful reading year and getting the list to just 10 was impossible.

As was the case with my previous post, "2018 in Review | Worst Books" I went over to my goodreads and looked over the books I read. There were so many that I enjoyed, so trying to whittle it down to my favorites was quite difficult. My current read (Queen of Air and Darkness) might become a favorite, so hopefully I can finish that up before the end of the year! Keep in mind that this list is purely my opinion, and this list might not be indicative of your tastes.

Without further ado, here are 13 books that were above and beyond.

Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I've always heard amazing things about Simon vs., and I am so glad I decided to read it! The book was spectacular, as was the movie adaptation. I haven't read this since February, but I'd love to revisit the book one day so I can bask in all the cuteness. 

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

I mean....it's Jenn Bennett! How could she not be on this list? Her YA contemporaries always deliver, and I should probably try out her adult novels. Starry Eyes was a wonderful read, and also another book I really want to own but don't. Starry Eyes is a combination of friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, and exes to lovers all in one relationship and I loved it. Also, there is a great relationship between the main character and her step-mom, which was great to see! 

Book Recommendations Based off Ariana Grande's "thank u, next"

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! First, I want to apologize for being so absent on here. I have barely been responding to comments, let alone commenting back and posting regularly. To make it up to you, I'm doing this post where I match books to the lyrics in Ariana Grande's latest single, "thank u, next."

Up until this year, I wasn't a mega-fan of Ariana Grande. I listened to her casually, but I didn't follow her music. But then Sweetener came out and I started playing closer attention to her. The album isn't perfect, but there are a lot of solid songs on there, and I frequently listen to it. And then she released "thank u, next." I was done for. I mean...what a BOP. To honor my favorite song at the moment, I'm going to be recommending some books based off the lyrics.

10 Perfect Summer Reads!

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be sharing ten books that I think are perfect for summer. For all my northern hemisphere readers, these books will be perfect whether you are lounging by the pool or are heading in for that miraculous air conditioning. For my southern hemisphere readers, I hope you enjoy these come December!

Without further ado, here are 10 books that I think are perfect for the summer!

Now, I don't know about you but when I think summer reads I immediately think: contemporary. Summer romance, summer jobs, getting ready for college, everything! BUT I do know that some of you don't like contemporary, so I'll make sure that there are some books outside of that genre.

10) Dating You/Hating You and Roomies by Christina Lauren

I had to have a two in one here! I recently read both of these books by Christina Lauren and thought they were the perfect summer reads. They are both romance novels, but have that fun spirit I associate with new adult reads. The chemistry is off the charts, and the plots suck me in!

TTT: Gems Published 7 or More Years Ago!

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today I'll be participating in Top Ten Tuesday, which is hosted by The Broke and Bookish. I don't do these memes on a weekly basis, but I loved the topic of this week! Today's topic is: "Throwback Freebie: Ten Books I Loved During The First Year I Started My Blog, Favorite Books Published 5 or 10 or 15 Years Ago, Ten Older Books I Forgot How Much I Loved, etc. etc. Tweak however you want!"

So with this throwback freebie, I decided to highlight some books that have been out for 7 years or more. 7 years ago, I was 11 years old, and not just starting to get into reading again. Whether I read them in sixth grade or just last week, here are some gems you might now know about!

10) Marmalade Boy by Wataru Yoshizumi
I will never stop talking about this manga series. I just absolutely love it, and whenever I need a good ol' pick me up, I read this. The manga was published in volumes in 2003, which was 14 years ago! Even though it's been a while since they've been published, I think that the series is till timely.


9) Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam
I'm going to say this right off the bat: this book is really f*cking weird. And well, I love it. I remember reading htis in fifth or sixth grade. I read it in 2014 to see what I thought about it again, and I really liked it! I don't LOVE it by any means, but I recommend it!


8) When it Happens by Susane Colasanti
When It Happens was published in 2006, and though you can kind of tell, it's not too bothersome. When It Happens was one of the first YA books I read, and at the time, I really loved it. I have since read it again two times, and I still stand by my opinion. To me, this is a classic YA contemporary.

Mangas I've Read + Give Me Recommendations!! (PLS)

Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog! I'm Genni, and today we are talking about manga. I've always wanted to talk about manga more on my blog, but I just haven't because I have a dilemma: I can't find manga that I am really interested in! So, I figured all of you could (hopefully) help me out! Give me some recommendations if you have them. Down below are the manga I've read and finished, and what I though about them so you'll get a feel for what I like. At the end I'll mention some manga that I never got around to finishing. I wouldn't be opposed to finishing them, they just don't grab my attention as much as I want them to!

Cat Street by Yoko Kamio
This was good, but it wasn't stand otu. I read it, I liked it, and I quickly moved on. Unlike some others in this list, Cat Street didn't really leave me with a lasting impact. every now and again it'll randomly pop in my head, but I didn't LOVE it.

Marmalade Boy
Marmalade Boy is one of my favorite mangas of all time. That's not saying much because I haven't read a ton (as you can see) but I just love this with all my heart. I don't know which one  I like more, Fruits Basket or Marmalade Boy. Both of them are my loves. :D

TTT: Books That Scream Summer

Hey everyone and welcome back! I'm Genni, and today I am participating in Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Today's topic is a summer freebie, so I am going to be doing the top ten books that scream summer.

When I think of books that scream summer, I always think contemporaries. Not just contemporaries, but those that are fun and not too dark! So here are my top ten recommendations for summery contemporaries!

Also, sorry this is coming up a day late! Let's just say that there was a project I was doing for school and it took me way longer than I anticipated. I started at 4pm, ended at 4am. UGH. I decided to prioritize sleep over blogging.

10) Seven Days of You by Cecilia Vinesse
Seven Days of You follows Sophia's last week in Japan before she moves to the states. Japan has become Sophia's home, and this book focuses on moving on and trying to deal with change. Someone from Sophia's past comes back the last week as well, and the book is chock full of drama. This book takes place in summer and it super fast paced, which is why it's the perfect book to read this summer!

9) Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett
If I could only recommend one book, it would be this one! This is my favorite book of the year so far; I absolutely love it! Alex, Approximately is based off of You've Got Mail, and is about Bailey "Mink" Rydell. She moves to California to live with her dad, and she hopes to find the boy that she has been IM'ing that also lives there. She doesn't tell him though, and crazy, funny, and moving antics ensue. I just can't stop raving about this book to anyone who asks me about it. Just....read it!!!


8) The Replacement Crush by Lisa Brown Roberts
I (think?) talk about about this book a lot on my blog! When I read the Replacement Crush last year, my expectations were blew out of the water, and this book seriously needs more love! Vivian, the main character, essentially tries to plan out her relationships with a list of safe crushes. But there's this annoyingly hot boy that works at the bookstore Vivian also works at...Need I say more? Who doesn't love a good hate to love angsty relationship? I know I do!

7) The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
Morgan Matson is known for her summery books! I could put probably any of her books on here, and people would agree. The Unexpected Everything is my favorite of Matson's books, which is why I picked this one out of what she has out right now. Let's just say friendships, dogs, awkwardly cute romance, and a father/daughter relationship are all huge themes in the book that made me love it.

6) One Paris Summer by Denise Grover Swank
Much like The Replacement Crush, One Paris Summer needs some more love! I read the book mid-May last year and it made me so ready and excited for summer. Sophie Brooks goes to Paris for the summer to hang out with her now estranged dad and his new family. There is obviously  animosity because of the situation. The family tensions were done so well and I love how Denise Grover Swank accurately described family and how convoluted it can become. The only thing I didn't love was the romance, but I know that I am the black sheep when it comes to this!

5) To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
Do I need to talk about why you should read this book? If you haven't already. I'm sure that you know what this book is about, because it is pretty popular in the YA world. If you don't To All the Boys I've Loved Before is a book that follows Lara Jean, a sophomore (or junior??) in the first book and the repercussions that follow after the love letters she kept in a hat box are mysteriously sent. This series spawned one of my favorite young adult couples, and I love Lara's voice. The first book was definitely my least favorite, but the second and third were just spectacular!

4) Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
I know that Hoover has faced some controversy recently, but I will not hold back with my love for Maybe Someday. Maybe Someday is a book that was literally made for me. It's perfect for the summer because it flies by and is chock-full of drama. If you want to read a Hoover book but don't know which one to start with, I would suggest this one. I personally think it is her best work though, so don't get your expectations too high when you move on to another book by hers!

3) Royally Lost by Angie Stanton
Royally Lost is one of those books that doesn't have much substance but it super fun to read. There have been times I have just opened this book on my Nook and started to read random passages. It isn't the most memorable or unique plot (a girl goes on a trip to Europe and falls in love with a prince who just wants to live his life) but it is a book that always leaves me happy and content at the end. Royally Lost is a super cutesy romance that warms my heart. And hey, it takes place in summer!

2) Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill
I haven't read Meant to Be in two or three years now, so I'm just not going to synopsize this. From what I remember, this book is a hate to love romance (my kryptonite) and takes place over the summer. Need I say more for why this is a perfect summer read. In fact, I might just pick this up again..

1) Marmalade Boy by Wataru Yoshizumi
So this last one is a manga series! Marmalade Boy is one of my favorite mangas of all time. I've only read about 7 or so mangas (I'm working on it!) but this always stands out. Whenever I just want to read manga but can't find a good series to delve into, I just reread this. There are 8 volumes, so you can get through the series fairly quickly too. Marmalade Boy is essentially a shojo romance between Miki and Yuu, who become step siblings. However, this is totally readable for all you guys out there!

So those are just ten of some great contemporary reads for this summer! What are some that you recommend. Also, sorry to all you fantasy lovers!! I'm a big fantasy reader too, but when I think summer, I immediatley think contemporary!
